Een groep Zoetermeerders die meedoet aan een van de grootste parades van de wereld. En bijna niemand die het weet! De circusartiesten van Circo di Strada vertonen zaterdag voor het oog van meer dan 155.000 mensen hun kunsten.
Misschien heb je ze al een keer in actie gezien. Die kans is groot na hun optredens op talloze festivals, in theaters, bij concerten en zelfs Formule 1-races. Nu staat Circo di Strada aan de vooravond van hun grootste show tot nu toe: de parade voor het Chinees nieuwjaar in Hong Kong, met zoals gezegd meer dan 155.000 bezoekers en meer dan 1,5 miljoen kijkers achter de buis. ,,Dit wordt echt kicken”, zegt Jori Veldhuizen (39) van Circo di Strada. ,,Het kan ons niet groot genoeg zijn. Het is op nationale en internationale tv live te zien. En in Nederland te volgen via streams.”
,,Zelfs Disneyland Hongkong doet mee aan de parade. Het is een eer om met hen in dezelfde line-up te staan. Disney is de koning van de parades, met een enorme vloot vol Disneykarakters.”
Hoe beland een groep, voor een groot deel, Zoetermeerders in Hongkong? De 39-jarige Veldhuizen is de oudste van de groep, de jongste Zoetermeerder is pas 19 jaar. Veldhuizen kwam bijna tien jaar geleden met het plan voor Circo di Strada. Toen hij dat bekendmaakte, werd hij voor gek verklaard door sommigen uit zijn omgeving. ,,Veel mensen kennen deze wereld amper. Ze zien ons op een festival, maar weten niet wat er allemaal voor nodig is. Wij zijn de enige in Nederland die naar Hongkong mogen en ook internationaal zijn er niet veel die het doen zoals wij.”
,,We werden dankzij social media landelijk opgepikt. De medeorganisatoren van de parade hier zagen ons tijdens de Formule 1 in Bahrein. Het is heel snel gegaan. In de afgelopen jaren hebben we al 12 landen, verdeeld over 3 continenten gezien. De ene keer hebben we de tijd om het land een beetje te ontdekken, de andere keer niet. In Hongkong doen we een citytour, maar in Egypte hebben we alleen het hotel en de evenementenlocatie gezien. Het is beslist geen vakantie.”
Circo di Strada bestaat deze optocht uit 12 circusartiesten die optreden tussen het publiek met steltlopers, jongleurs, eenwielfietsers, dansers en acteurs. In Hongkong tonen zij voor het eerst hun nieuwe parade: Circolation. Daarvoor werd voor tienduizenden euro’s aan nieuwe kostuums gemaakt. Ook werd een groot acrowheel, met een doorsnede van 2,5 meter, gebouwd zodat acrobaten in en rondom het wiel kunnen optreden. ,,Dat is nog niet eerder vertoond. Een nieuwe show neerzetten is een flinke investering die we daarna moeten terugverdienen met shows. Als ik rijk wilde worden, had ik een ander vak moeten leren”, zegt de Zoetermeerse showman met meer dan 25 jaar ervaring.
In Nederland konden ze natuurlijk niet ontbreken tijdens de circuseditie van de Toppers in Concert, met in totaal bijna 200.000 bezoekers in de Arena. ,,In Singapore is er nog een megaparade en het carnaval bij Nice zouden we ooit nog willen doen. Ook kleinere evenementen in binnen- en buitenland hebben z’n charmes.”
Ondanks hun succes voelen ze zich niet te groot voor de stad waar het voor hen begon. Ondanks dat ze op korte termijn niet in Zoetermeer te zien zijn. ,,Maar we keren graag terug met onze nieuwe show. De laatste keer waren we met een kleinere groep in Winkelcentrum Rokkeveen en een optocht door het Stadshart. Veel kleiner dan in Hongkong, maar we doen het met net zoveel passie en plezier. Al doet de grote menigte in Hongkong natuurlijk wel iets met je adrenaline.”
Zaterdag om 13.00 uur Nederlandse tijd gaat de Chinese parade van start.

You may have seen them in action before. That chance is high after their performances at countless festivals, in theaters, at concerts and even Formula 1 races. Now Circo di Strada is on the eve of their biggest show yet: the Chinese New Year parade in Hong Kong, with more than 155,000 visitors and more than 1.5 million viewers. “This is really going to be a thrill,” says Jori Veldhuizen (39) of Circo di Strada. "It can't be big enough for us. It can be seen live on national and international TV. And can be followed in the Netherlands via streams.”
“Even Hong Kong Disneyland is participating in the parade. It's an honor to be in the same lineup with them. Disney is the king of the parades, with a huge fleet full of Disney characters.”
How does a group of, largely Zoetermeer residents, end up in Hong Kong? The 39-year-old Veldhuizen is the oldest of the group, the youngest Zoetermeer is only 19 years old. Veldhuizen came up with the plan for Circo di Strada almost ten years ago. When he announced this, some people around him thought he was crazy. “Many people barely know this world. They see us at a festival, but don't know what it takes. We are the only ones in the Netherlands who are allowed to go to Hong Kong and there are not many internationally who do it like us.”
“We were picked up nationally thanks to social media. The co-organizers of the parade here saw us during Formula 1 in Bahrain. It happened very quickly. In recent years we have already seen 12 countries spread over 3 continents. Sometimes we have time to explore the country a bit, other times we don't. In Hong Kong we do a city tour, but in Egypt we only saw the hotel and the event location. It's definitely not a holiday.”
Circo di Strada, this parade consists of 12 circus artists who perform among the audience with stilt walkers, jugglers, unicycle riders, dancers and actors. In Hong Kong they are showing their new parade for the first time: Circolation. Tens of thousands of euros worth of new costumes were made for this. A large acrowheel, with a diameter of 2.5 meters, was also built so that acrobats can perform in and around the wheel. “That has never been seen before. Putting on a new show is a significant investment that we then have to recoup with shows. If I wanted to become rich, I should have learned another trade,” says the Zoetermeer showman with more than 25 years of experience.
In the Netherlands they could not be missed during the circus edition of the Toppers in Concert, with a total of almost 200,000 visitors in the Arena. "There is another mega parade in Singapore and we would like to do the carnival in Nice someday. Smaller events at home and abroad also have their charms.”
Despite their success, they do not feel too big for the city where it all started for them. Even though they cannot be seen in Zoetermeer in the short term. "But we are happy to return with our new show. The last time we were with a smaller group in the Rokkeveen Shopping Center and a parade through the Stadshart. Much smaller than in Hong Kong, but we do it with just as much passion and pleasure. Although the large crowds in Hong Kong do something with your adrenaline.”
The Chinese parade will start on Saturday at 1:00 PM Dutch time.
