(Dutch below) Dutch circus artists represent the Netherlands in Hong Kong at one of the largest parades in the world
More than 150,000 visitors and approximately 1.5 million TV viewers saw the artists of Circo di Strada shine last week at one of the most visited and watched events in the world: the international Chinese New Year Parade in Hong Kong. With their latest circus parade Circolation, the originally Zoetermeer company provided impressive performances, which were received with loud applause and great enthusiasm.
With a large acro wheel, various stilt walkers, jugglers, unicycle riders, dancers and actors, the twelve artists performed in the kilometer-long parade between the enormous buildings of Hong Kong. Along the parade route, 155,000 visitors had been waiting for hours to catch a glimpse of this major happening: a procession with up to 2,000 (inter)national artists. The Dutch circus parade passed by amid loud cheering and cheering and they showed off their circus skills. “If you get all the phones in the air, then you know you are doing it right,” says owner and artist Jori Veldhuizen.

Live on international TV
At the start of this parade, all participating groups were allowed to show their performance in the TV zone, which was broadcast live on international television. This also applies to the Dutch company Circo di Strada with their new performance Circolation. There were many VIPs, guests and visitors in the stands of the TV zone who had obtained a highly sought-after ticket. At home, 1.5 million people from all over the world were watching. “Showing a performance with our talented group of artists, knowing that so many people are enjoying it, gives such an adrenaline rush,” says Jori. “Acts are flown in from all over the world to participate in this annual parade. This year we were allowed to represent the Netherlands again. A great honor and a great opportunity to show our latest circus parade. Performing for more than an hour and a half with a parade through this metropolis, where there are really non-stop queues of spectators, is really impressive."

A great honor
In addition to the big parade, the Dutch circus artists were also allowed to amaze the audience at another prominent location in the city, near the Avenue of Stars. Once again the circus group managed to bring smiles and wonder to the faces of the spectators. It was a great honor for the company to be back in Hong Kong during the Chinese New Year. They were previously guests at this event in 2018, with their performance Circo di Strada (their first circus parade to which the company owes its name). Their performances have subsequently been shown at Formula 1 (several countries), Toppers in Concert (Netherlands, Amsterdam Arena) and major events, parades and festivals in many countries in Europe, but also in Dubai, Egypt and Macau (the Las Vegas of China).

Large acrowheel on transport
There is a lot involved in designing and creating a unique circus parade, as well as the entire organization for an intercontinental performance. The costumes were designed by Jori and his partner Vera Weber, together with a studio from Amsterdam. The different disciplines have been carefully selected and rehearsed with the versatile artists. “The eye-catcher of this act is a large, unique acrowheel of 2.5 meters in diameter, in which two artists perform acrobatic feats. We had this acro wheel remade especially for the adventure in Hong Kong, so that it can be completely dismantled and can be taken as luggage on the plane. It is very important that it is transported carefully, so that the acrowheel could be assembled safely in Hong Kong. This foreign performance took ten weeks of preparation and a lot of creativity, but we did it!" says a proud Jori. By realizing this new acro wheel, they are ready for new domestic and foreign adventures. The French premiere is planned for next May.

Nederlandse circusartiesten vertegenwoordigen Nederland in Hong Kong bij één van de grootste parades ter wereld
Ruim 150.000 bezoekers en ca. 1.5 miljoen TV-kijkers zagen afgelopen week de artiesten van Circo di Strada schitteren op één van de best bezochte en bekeken evenementen ter wereld: de internationale Chinees Nieuwjaar Parade in Hong Kong. Met hun nieuwste circusparade Circolation zorgde het van origine Zoetermeerse bedrijf voor indrukwekkende optredens, dat onder luid applaus en met veel enthousiasme werd ontvangen.
Met een groot acrowheel, diverse steltlopers, jongleurs, eenwielfietsers, dansers en acteurs traden de twaalf artiesten op in de kilometers lange optocht tussen de enorme gebouwen van Hong Kong. Langs de route van de parade stonden al urenlang 155.000 bezoekers te wachten, om een glimp op te vangen van deze grote happening: een stoet met wel 2000 (inter)nationale artiesten. Onder hard gejoel en gejuich trok de Nederlandse circusparade voorbij en vertoonden zij hun circuskunsten. “Als je alle telefoons in de lucht krijgt, dan weet je dat je het goed doet”, aldus eigenaar en artiest Jori Veldhuizen.

Live op internationale TV
Bij het begin van deze parade mochten alle deelnemende groepen in de TV-zone hun performance vertonen, welke live werd uitgezonden op internationale televisie. Zo ook het Nederlandse gezelschap Circo di Strada met hun nieuwe performance Circolation. Op de tribunes van de TV-zone zaten vele VIPS, genodigden en bezoekers die een zeer gewild ticket bemachtigd hadden. Thuis keken er 1,5 miljoen mensen van over de hele wereld mee. “Een performance vertonen met onze talentvolle groep artiesten, wetende dat er zoveel mensen meegenieten, dat geeft zo’n adrenaline kick”, aldus Jori. “Van over de hele wereld worden acts ingevlogen om te mogen deelnemen aan deze jaarlijkse parade. Dit jaar mochten wij wederom Nederland vertegenwoordigen. Een grote eer en een mooie kans om onze nieuwste circusparade te vertonen. Ruim anderhalf uur lang optreden met een parade door deze wereldstad, waar het écht non-stop rijen dik staat aan publiek, is echt zo indrukwekkend”.

Een grote eer
Naast de grote parade mochten de Nederlandse circusartiesten ook op een andere prominente plek in de stad het publiek verwonderen, vlak bij de Avenue of Stars. Wederom lukte het de circusgroep om een lach en verwondering op de gezichten van de toeschouwers te laten verschijnen. Het was een zeer grote eer voor het gezelschap om terug te zijn in Hong Kong tijdens het Chinees Nieuwjaar. In 2018 waren zij eerder bij dit evenement te gast, toentertijd met hun performance Circo di Strada (hun eerste circusparade waar het gezelschap de naam aan te danken heeft). Hun performances zijn vervolgens te zien geweest bij o.a. Formule 1 (diverse landen), Toppers in Concert (Nederland, Amsterdam Arena) en grote evenementen, parades en festivals in vele landen van Europa, maar ook in Dubai, Egypte en Macau (het Las Vegas van China).

Groot acrowheel op transport
Er gaat heel wat aan vooraf, aan zowel het bedenken en creëren van een unieke circusparade, alsook de hele organisatie voor een intercontinentaal optreden. De kostuums zijn door Jori en zijn partner Vera Weber ontworpen, samen met een atelier uit Amsterdam. De verschillende disciplines zijn zorgvuldig uitgezocht en gerepeteerd met de veelzijdige artiesten. “De eyecatcher van deze act is een groot, uniek acrowheel van 2,5 meter in doorsnee, waarin twee artiesten acrobatische kunsten uithalen. Speciaal voor het avontuur in Hong Kong hebben wij dit acrowheel opnieuw laten maken, zodat het volledig demontabel is en mee kan als bagage in het vliegtuig. Erg belangrijk hierbij is dat het op een zorgvuldige manier vervoerd wordt, zodat het acrowheel in Hong Kong op een veilige manier in elkaar gezet kon worden. Dit buitenlandse optreden kostte tien weken voorbereiding en veel creativiteit, maar het is ons gelukt!" aldus een trotse Jori. Door de realisatie van dit nieuwe acrowheel zijn zij klaar voor nieuwe binnenlandse en buitenlandse avonturen. Zo staat de Franse première gepland voor komende mei.
