What is a walking act and why does it work so well for events and festivals?

Anyone visiting a festival, city celebration, or event has undoubtedly seen them: colorful performers moving among the crowd, making people laugh, and leaving a smile wherever they appear. These are walking acts. But what exactly is a walking act? And why do they create such an experience time and time again?

At Circo di Strada, we have been working with mobile circus acts and parade entertainment at events all over the world since 2016. As a result, we know better than anyone why a good walking act has such an impact.

What is a walking act, walk-about, roaming parade, or mobile street entertainment?

A walking act (also known as a walk-act, walkabout, parade or roaming street entertainment) is a performance in which the artists do not remain on a fixed stage but move freely among the audience. Several synonyms are used for performances that literally come to the visitors and take place among the crowd

Instead of visitors waiting for entertainment, the entertainment actually meets the visitors. This creates spontaneous moments, surprising encounters, and personal interactions.

A walking act can consist of a single artist, but also of a complete parade with multiple performers. Think of:

  • stilt walkers;

  • jugglers;

  • acrobats;

  • unicyclists;

  • performers on a large balance ball;

  • musical or theatrical characters.

It is precisely the combination of different disciplines that makes a mobile act lively and surprising. With the addition of the versatility of the artists from the Circo di Strada parades, they amaze not only with their costumes, but also with the skills for which they have trained for years.

Why does a walking act work so well for festivals and events?

1. The audience becomes part of the experience

With a walking act, the performer literally walks right through the audience. People get a direct, up-close experience; artists connect with the visitors, children get a high five, get to join in for a moment, or take a photo with the artists.

As a result, the audience feels like part of the experience rather than a spectator.

2. Atmosphere is created throughout the event

A fixed stage draws visitors to a single location. A walking act, on the other hand, spreads energy throughout the entire festival or event, making it a great addition to the experience between the various stages. At festivals, shopping centers, city parties, and amusement parks, this means that even quieter parts of the event come to life. Wherever the artists appear, curiosity, wonder, and a lively atmosphere immediately arise.

3. Everyone experiences the walk-about act differently

No two encounters are the same. A small child looks with wonder at a stilt walker several meters high, while adults mainly enjoy the humor, acrobatics, and other skills. The visual aspect appeals to young and old alike. Every visitor creates their own memory.

4. Ideal for photos and social media

Striking costumes, impressive circus disciplines, and colorful parades invite people to take photos and videos. Visitors often share these images directly on social media, giving the event extra visibility. For organizers, that is a nice bonus: entertainment that works not only during the event but also generates extra visibility online.

Why do many festivals and events choose a circus parade from Circo di Strada?

A circus parade is actually the most elaborate form of a walking act.

Instead of a single performer, a complete group of artists moves across the grounds. Various disciplines alternate, allowing visitors to discover something new every time.

At Circo di Strada, we combine, among other things:

  • stilt walkers;

  • jugglers;

  • acrobats;

  • unicyclists;

  • performers on a large balance ball;

  • colorful costumes;

  • mobile music;

  • interaction with the audience.

This creates a live performance that is constantly in motion.

Why do mobile street acts work so well at festivals and events?

Festivals and events often feature large grounds, and visitors are constantly walking around.

That is precisely why a walking act fits perfectly into this environment.

While visitors are on their way to a stage, food court, or attraction, they are unexpectedly surprised by artists passing by. This creates ever-new experiences without visitors having to adjust their route. The act becomes part of the festival experience. The greater the experience and immersion, the longer people want to stay at an event.

The Circo di Strada Experience: over 10 years walk-acts & international parades

Circo di Strada is not a booking agency, but a professional company of circus artists. As a result, clients always have direct contact with the performing artists. Since 2016, we have been providing colorful circus parades, walking acts, and street theater at festivals, events, processions, and amusement parks. Furthermore, our performances have received international awards, including the Best Costume Award at the Macao International Parade.

Our mobile acts are designed to surprise the audience, connect them, and keep an event constantly in motion. From large festival grounds to atmospheric city centers: we bring the same energy, interaction, and wonder everywhere.

A walking act is much more than just entertainment that walks a lap. It is a mobile experience that meets visitors unexpectedly, spreads atmosphere, and actively involves people in the event.

Do you want to surprise your visitors with a colorful circus parade or interactive walking act? Then Circo di Strada will ensure an unforgettable experience that will be remembered long after the event.
